VFW holds banquet for Patriot’s Pen, Voice of Democracy winners

REXBURG — Winners of the District level of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy essay contests were presented awards at a banquet held at the Rexburg VFW building.

Winners for Patriot’s Pen included Amelia Hill, first place; Kayley Leavitt, second place; and Alyssa Farnes, third place.

For Voices of Democracy, winners included Alissa Dorman, first place; Ulissa Perez, second place; and Lexi Wightman, third place.

Wightman and Leavitt were not present at the banquet.

While both are essay contests, Voices of Democracy is for students in grades nine through 12, while Patriot’s Pen includes grades six through eight.

During the banquet, Tim Hinseth said the main difference between the contests is the age groups involved, but there are also some minor rule variations.

Those receiving awards at the banquet had the opportunity to read their essays to an audience of family members and VFW representatives.

The topics students were assigned to write for both contests included “My vision for America” and “What freedom means to me.”

Hinseth told those present at the banquet that he was impressed with how students interpreted the themes this year, especially “What freedom means to me.”

“It’s amazing to me that young people in your age groups can actually pinpoint some definite things about the concept of freedom,” he said.

In addition to receiving certificates, Patriot’s Pen and Voices of Democracy winners received money.

For Patriot’s Pen and Voices of Democracy, the first place winner received $100, second place received $75 and third place received $50.

Hinseth told the Standard Journal that first place winners Dorman and Hill will now move on to the department, or state-level, competition in Boise.

State first place winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the national competition, with the chance to win awards ranging from $10,000 to $30,000.
